Did you know that gum disease is one of the most prevalent health problems facing American adults today? It’s a bit surprising, but a lot of people suffer from gum disease. Whether it’s mild inflammation, or severe enough to cause gum recession and tooth decay, the really surprising part here is that gum disease is completely preventable.

But how can you make sure that you stay safe from gum disease? It’s not that hard. Dr. Shahnam Amini, Dr. Mimi Chow and the staff here at Centro Family Dental in Houston, Texas, have a few great tips to help you avoid gum disease.

Regular checkups
You need to make sure you’re visiting your dentist every six months for a regular checkup and cleaning. These cleanings are one of the best ways to prevent tartar buildup. Tartar is hardened plaque that builds up along your gum line. That buildup, if it’s not removed, will inflame your gums. This inflammation is known as gingivitis, and it’s the first warning sign of gum disease.

As important as flossing and brushing are to avoiding gum disease, mouthwash plays an equally important role. After you’ve brushed and flossed, and done all you possibly can to make sure that your gums are as health as possible, it’s time to get rid of any remaining bacteria and debris with mouthwash.

You’ll kill the majority of the germs and debris you couldn’t with the brushing and flossing, keeping that harmful stuff away from your gums.

Gum disease is completely avoidable as long as you’re willing to start the habits necessary to do so. If you have any questions, call us today at 713-644-4446.
